Miniatures

Our miniature herd (currently comprised of 3 mares and 1 stallion), was founded not solely for our own interest but also to help create an interest for later generations of the Swan clan. Jenna, Kate and Fraser are still young enough to have more confidence with the smaller ponies.

Notwithstanding difference in height, we have applied the same “standards” for the miniatures as for our standard height ponies. They are quite simply smaller editions.

We were very fortunate to have Sandy and Dorothy Gray ('NorthWells' and 'Bogs' Studs) as advisors/mentors. Jim, first and foremost, was and still is a great admirer of his beloved 'Clydesdales'. This was originally encouraged by his grandfather, who ploughed, worked with, prepared  and showed these magnificent beasts. Jim's love of the breed has led to his being a 'Life Member' of the Clydesdale Society. His knowledge of show qualities,  points particular to show quality Clydesdales, undoubtedly passed on to him and fostered by his grandfather, together with a knowledge of the pedigrees and history of some of the better known Clydesdales, allowed him to have a 'shared interest' not only with Sandy but also with H.P.Sleigh who was a real stalwart member of the Clydesdale Society and who owned and showed some quality Clydesdales. (Kismet being an outstanding example). Jim is fairly confident that this 'shared interest' was integral in his getting to know Sandy and Harry fairly well. This is something that Jim is extremely grateful for and proud of.

Just as H.P.Sleigh has done with our Standards, so Sandy Gray has done with our Miniatures.

32” Palomino. DoB: 16/05/97 Buzz is very much an integral part of our miniature stud. He is the sire of three of our retained mares and of our colt, Stow Jasper, retained for show/stud duties. Buzz’s show career includes Male Championships at Breed and RHAS shows as well as Overall Breed Championships at other prestigious shows.

He is also a proven breeder of top quality show progeny. His maternal line goes back to “Houlland”, Shetland Islands, mares very much admired by Sandy Gray. His sire’s dam line traces back through very successful “Annandale” mares to a “Netherley” line, “Black Diamond”. The very first mare “Eldorado of Annandale” was bought by Jim at a Breed Society sale. She was chosen solely through her looks. This “Black Diamond of Netherley” family means a lot to us and has left “Champions” at Standard and Mini levels. The same family, we believe, has left its mark on the “Firth Stud”.

Bright Chestnut, with blaze. DoB: 16/04/02  This beautiful, tiny, “Firth” bred mare was bought as a foal along with her mother Firth Jasmine at the Firth Stud dispersal sale. An inspection of the stock previous to the sale date left Jim in no doubt that Jasmine, in his opinion, was the best show quality mare on offer and her foal Jazz11 was the most promising foal. Enquiries enlightened us as to how successful Jasmine had been in the show ring, this continuing from an early age right through to adulthood.. The line breeding, Annandale lines back to Black Diamond of Netherley (976IS), of this combination reassured us that we desperately wanted to purchase if at all possible. We were extremely pleased when they were purchased and even more pleased now that the foal has developed into a quality mare and who has left us an absolutely outstanding son, Jasper.
